Character Name: Walter Delques
Canon: Tales of Legendia
Canon Point: Post-death, Chapter 7
Background/History: Here you go. o/
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality:
In all honesty, Walter's personality can be summed up in two words -- cold and arrogant. He for the most part believes in the racial superiority of the Ferines over that of the Orerines (the humans of his world). While his background isn't exactly touched upon in-game, it's been made pretty clear that he's been touched by some sort of personal tragedy that that, plus the prejudicial views that the Ferines people have long had against the Orerines, make him the twisted racist that he is. Unfortunately, Walter's hatred and his reluctance to let go of his past hinders him in this way -- he can't see past the racial prejudices that he's imposed on himself to see an individual's character and their opinions. It's mainly because of this misguided belief that Walter takes Maurits' side to try and rid the planet of the Orerines race.
Part of his hate also stems from jealousy, amusingly enough. As the game brings out, under normal circumstances Walter would have been the leader of the Merines' personal troop of bodyguards. Despite this, though, he'd found that his own position was usurped by one Senel Coolidge, whom he'd already seen and deemed a corruptive influence. Needless to say, this resulted in him having deep insecurities about his own adequacy as the Merines' bodygaurd as well as a form of envy of their close bonds with each other. Poor guy.
Walter can also be recklessly persistent. I say 'reckless' because really, while it's admirable for him to be able to take on a mission by himself, he tends to get into more trouble on each than it's worth. From his stint at fighting through Vaclav's men in the Waterways to save Fenimore and Shirley, to his repeated attempts to stop Senel and party from reaching the Merines, Walter has shown remarkable determination in preventing what he thinks is an attempt to corrupt the Merines with their influence. Unfortunately, this also is his undoing -- despite being determined, he has an innate inability to know when to back down and retreat. Not only that, he's also a bit, er, extreme when it comes to accomplishing whatever tasks are set before him, going so far as to ignore his physical health to make sure that he accomplishes his mission -- both flaws of which end in his untimely death.
Despite these things, he's shown to actually have a bit of a caring side to him. Even during the whole bit where he kidnapped Shirley, he ends up protecting her from a collapsing pillar, instead having it fall on top of him. He demonstrates this again when he blasts through all manner of Crusand soldiers to rescue Shirley and Fenimore, even hiding then in a hidden chamber before going off to fight more of the soldiers -- and presumably Melanie the Crimson. Really, if there's something that can be drawn from this it's that he's fiercely protective of those whom he considers friends/those that are under his care, to the point of risking his life for them. He can also be amazingly pragmatic when the situation calls for it -- despite his hatred for the Orerines race in general, he's willing to swallow his pride long enough to work alongside Senel and party during their assault on Vaclav's forces.
Another due note is that Walter can also be kind in his own way, though this really isn't touched upon in-game other than in his interactions with Fenimore, both prior to and after her death. This seems to imply that one can gain his trust, though the degree of difficulty in getting said trust depends on mostly one's race and just how persistent the other one can be, if the game is to be believed. ( An NPC even notes that Walter is rude in order to hide his kindness... implying that he can be capable of kindness, but hides it to be efficient. Though considering everyone is Orerines it's safe to say that almost all of Haven will have to work to gain his trust. )
Abilities/Powers:
Walter is a member of the Ferines race -- thus, his body chemistry is vastly different from that of the Orerines (i.e., the normal humans of their world). For one, he possesses the ability to breathe underwater, his swimming skills are above par, he has the ability to command all manner of high-level Crystal Eres (their world's equivalent of magic, which will be explained in more detail later), he can read and speak a language called Relares, and also project a teriques -- basically an extension of a Ferines' soul that takes the form of wings and can be used in battle, to fly and to toss stuff around. Considering all of this is par for the average Ferines, though, it's really nothing too special in his world.
He's a practitioner of both iron and crystal eres -- which means that he can both use magic in battle and fight up-close with his fists. Spellwise, he can command all manner of powerful and devastating spells that span all manner of elements, from water to fire to ice to even electricity. Physically, Walter's iron eres (martial arts skills) are on par with Senel's and are just as devastating as his spells. Furthermore, he uses his teriques in battle to either fly or attack his enemies as he wishes -- and with the addition of the Whisper Crystal he can command automata, sentinel units that are basically attack drones.
... though for the sake of the game I will not allow Wally to use his automata here. He'll be fine without them, I think.
Items/Weapons: Guy's only got one or two items he can bring with him at this point, anyway, so... yeah, other than the clothes on his back he's only getting his alternate costume.
It's okay, he's worked under similar conditions before. :D
Sample Entry: So will this work? 8U
Sample Entry Two: There was a soft groan as Walter cringed at the flickering light dancing across his eyes as he slowly opened them. The first thing he notices is the dust, the tinge of blood, the scents of rusted metal and dust mingling together... below him was a rough, scratchy sensation that he soon recognized as a bed. His sensitive ears heard nothing but the occasional... occasional... breeze, wasn't that it? But wait, wasn't he... supposed to have been...?
Walter's brain worked its way through his memories, tracing what had happened and hoping to try and clear some things up. He had been in the Wings of Light, controlling the Royal Automaton in one last valiant attempt to keep Senel Coolidge, that wretched Orerines, away from the Merines and tricking her into not performing her duties as the Merines. Instead, Senel and the group were victorious, and he'd had to live with the fact that he'd failed his duties to her, even confessing to Senel, of all people, about his issues... it sickened him.
He weakly brought his fist up to hit the ground in frustration and instead hit a wooden floor. Walter coughed as he attempted to stand, only making himself feel sicker as he swayed and fell back against the dirty wall. He sighed, laying against it for some time -- he wasn't sure how long -- and letting his memories, thoughts and senses string together tightly before he finally stood upright, the sickly feeling gone. He finally took in his surroundings -- was this supposed to be the mainland? Spotting a nearby window and looking outside, he beheld the ruins of an Orerines town -- the same ruins that he'd just awoken in. Just what was going on here?
Furthermore, wasn't he supposed to be dead? He'd felt the unmistakable frigid touch envelop him; he balled his fingers into a fist and opened it several times in succession. His hands weren't clammy, livid or pale from death; rather, they were warm to the touch. Renewed strength. How bitterly ironic that he would gain back his powers after he had passed, evidence of his failure to the Merines. Growling, he slammed a fist hard into the floor below him before he stood. He cursed himself silently -- how could he have been reduced to this, losing both life and honor in such a manner?! Walter huffed, wrapping his dignity around him as if it were some sort of ephemeral version of his usual cloak, though he felt like it didn't help him all that much. He shook his head, doing his best to clear his mind as he dismissed the crumbling town that stood in front of him.
How completely depressing. There was an angry twitch in Walter's eyebrow as he scoffed, eyes narrowed in frustration and some level of unpleasant surprise. He was not at all pleased with his discovery, his awakening in a new land; crossing his arms and trying to bite back a curse in Relares as he paused to think about just what, exactly, this meant for his well-being. Though part of him had to admit that in some strange way, he did have this... place, wherever it was, to thank for allowing him a chance to live again, not that it really mattered that much now. Walter's thoughts drifted back to the Merines -- he felt as if he had to make sure to do something; anything to make up for what he felt as a great failure on his part. Looking over the desolated city, and down at the mess of what he thought were Orerines before him, though, he'd have to figure out just what was with this place first.
If only it were that simple. Still, there really wasn't much left he could do now, was there...? Muttering under his breath, he summoned his teriques to investigate this crumbling facade of a town. The sooner he had a grasp on the situation, the sooner he could start figuring out just what he was sent here for, exactly.
